- At Eagle Field, Joyce (15 yrs old) and her sister Eva Lee (17 yrs old) gased and oiled planes used during training missons. In 1942, family moved to Richmond to work in shipyards. Joyce was 16 yrs old, but had to lie about her age to work, saying she was 19 yrs old since her sister Eva was 18yrs old. Joyce was a burner on the ships, working a lot of the time in engine rooms burning where the engines would be placed and burning where pipes would be placed. Joyce's sister Lula May Easley worked with sister Eva as welders. Her father George Francis Easley also worked in shipyard. Joyce had brothers serving in military, and younger brothers at home (9 siblings, 10 total children).
