Name/Location of Company Worked
Inland Steel Company, Chicago, IL
Dates of Work
1976 - 1982
Type of Work
I was a Steel worker/laborer at Inland Steel company during Summers in college and then permanently from 1980 to 82. I became a licensed forklift driver in the steel mill and a Union steward in the steelworker's local 1010. In 1979, the USW Local 1010 (17,500 members) elected three officers to run elections for 140 grievers, Stewart's and safety committee men. The three elected officials were women and made history in 1979 as the first women to run a USW election. I was 21 yo at the time. Additionally, this leadership was not only female, but was also multicultural in that Ernestine Mitchell, the chairwoman was an African-American, Melisa (Millie) Lalich the vice chair, was a Caucasian, and the elected secretary was Rosa Marie Salas, a Hispanic woman. Years after the massive layoffs in the steel mill industry in the early 80s, I returned to school to get my nursing degree and after an additional 27 years spent in nursing, I am retired and currently enjoying life in Chandler, Arizona
