1942-1943 & 1943-1946
Type of Work
Worked as a teenager in the fields harvesting potatoes, along with two sisters, Marian and Anna. Worked alongside prisoners of war who were held in camps in the area. Accounts of this can be found in the book, The Enemy Among Us: POWs in Missouri During WWII, by David Fiedler. The straw hat worn while working in the fields, with some of the ties used to close gunny sacks still hanging from the brim where I kept them handy, is now on display at the Lee's Summitt (MO) Community Center, where I have given talks about my experiences. After high school was employed to pack ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant located east of Independence, MO. where she met her future husband. She told of slipping notes of encouragement in the cases of ammunition, although the girls were told not to do so. The plant switched to production of caskets (for return of soldiers' bodies) for a time in 1945-46
