Name/Location of Company Worked
Kelly-Springfield Tire Company and Allegany Ordnance Plant; now named Allegany Ballistics Laboratory
Dates of Work
1942-1945
Type of Work
Beatrice served Kelly Springfield managers and military officers in the management cafeteria. Kelly Springfield tire management transported Beatrice and another woman to Allegheny ordinance plant in Pinto Maryland, to serve management and military officers in that cafeteria. The Allegheny ordinance plant the origin of Allegheny ballistic laboratory, came into existence by the Kelly Springfield tire company, which found itself in a raw materials supply crisis in 1941. As World War II escalated, the United States entered the war, natural rubber producing areas of the world were largely under Japanese control. Procurement and transportation of natural rubber became difficult. As a result, Kelly Springfield learned that it’s supply of natural rubber would soon cease completely. Determined to keep his company alive, Edmond S Burke, president of Kelly Springfield since 1934, set off in search of defense manufacturing business. This effort proved fruitful as the newly organized Kelly Springfield engineer and company won a contract for the production of 8 inch high explosive shells on January 31, 1942. The addition of the 50 caliber armor piercing machine gun ammunition soon followed. The company quickly converted its tire manufacturing plant to a large machine shop operation for the production of shells.
