After graduation from Mackinaw City High School, she earned a certificate from Central State Teachers College to follow in her mother’s footsteps but as WWII progressed, she was recruited to learn welding to help fill jobs that had been vacated by men who went off to fight in the war. Martha earned her welding wings but never joined that workforce.
