After completing a Virginia trade school course in electric welding, she worked as a combination welder at the Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. She mastered acetylene and electric welding and was familiar with pipe, cast iron, sheet steel and alloys. She worked standing on the ground, as well as suspended in the air to work on a water tank. After the war, she became the first and only female welder at Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, IA.
