The Willow Run Bomber Plant was built by the Ford Motor Company in 1941. The plant predominantly produced the B-24 Liberator military aircraft. She mentioned that she enjoyed her coworkers, who were kind people. Martus recounted a story about a Black employee. During the 1943 Detroit riot, the young man was afraid to go home, so Martus’s supervisors let him sleep in a plane. Martus thought the gesture was “quite nice,” and the memory has stuck with her.
