She married her only love James Horton, also of Amsterdam, on August 1, 1943, in Amarillo, TX, where he was training as a B17 engine mechanic while at Amarillo Army Airforce Base. She accompanied him to various other bases and packed parachutes before going home in 1944 and working at GE in Schnectady, NY, assembling submarine relay switches while Jim was receiving more training in B29 engine mechanics.
