Colette Agnes Walsh Dugan, 88, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011 with her youngest daughter and son-in-law at her side. Colette was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Morgan Dugan; her two sisters: Elaine Walsh Hamilton and her brother-in-law James Drier Hamilton, Marie Walsh Kinsella and her brother-in-law Paul William Kinsella; her brother, David Lloyd Walsh, and her sister-in-law, Donna Riley Walsh. Colette loved growing up in Chicago surrounded by siblings, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. She shared countless stories of acting up in Catholic school and spending summers at cottages on Lake Michigan. After completing high school, she worked various, interesting jobs to save up to go to college “out west.” Because of her beautiful handwriting, she was hired at Time magazine, but the job she was most proud of was working as a “Rosy the Riveter” at the Pullman Plant during World War II where she made ailerons for the C-47, the military version of the DC-3. She moved out to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico. In one of her classes, she noticed a young man staring at her from across the room. Turns out it was someone she had dated once when she was only 13 back in Chicago, Paul Morgan Dugan. Their reunion resulted in a courtship, marriage and eventually seven children, 15 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She and Paul lived for a time in Albuquerque as Paul completed his engineering degree and then worked at Sandia Laboratories. The couple eventually ended up in Los Alamos and lived there for over 40 years. Determined to finish the degree she started before marrying Paul, Colette returned to college when her seventh child entered school. She graduated at the top of her class with a degree in education in 1974 at age 50. She then worked as an elementary teacher at Pojoaque Elementary School, Holy Cross Elementary School, and then for the Española School District as a Chapter I Reading teacher. Colette was an inspiration to many because of her exuberance for life. She had many hobbies and interests/passions. As a child she learned to play the piano in the basement of her Chicago home and she kept chickens in their backyard. It was her love of horses that contributed to her strong desire to live in the western United States. She loved telling stories of her job riding horses out on the open land immediately north and east of the UNM campus to help pay her tuition. No matter where she lived, she always had vegetable and flower gardens and continued to raise chickens. She sewed and crocheted, cooked delicious meals, entertained friends, attended school functions, volunteered for the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos, and even got an Amateur radio license. But her true passion was playing bridge. Up until the last week of her life she played bridge once or sometimes even twice a week. Even as her condition weakened over the last few years, Colette kept busy doing what she could: playing bridge, of course, but also playing the piano, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, writing notes and cards to friends and relatives, calling and spending time with her beloved friends, children and grandchildren just to say hello and check in. Her passion for life, her devotion to family and friends, and her positive attitude will be very much missed.\r\nColette is survived by her seven children: Mary Anne Dugan, Mike Dugan, Pat Dugan, Eileen Dugan Waldschmidt and husband Mike Waldschmidt, John Dugan and his wife Michele Martel, David Dugan, and Cathy Dugan Majerus and her husband Pat Majerus; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.\r\nAll our love to you, Mom.\r\n Rosary will be recited on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos. Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Christian Concern Committee at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos, New Mexico or to a charity of your choice.
